Writing an impressive CV

How do I make my CV stand out?
Generally, the best way of ensuring that you get a good response from your curriculum vitae is by making sure it is full to the brim with relevant information to complement and support your professional, academic or research objective. This information should be prioritized and well organised to catch the eye of your potential employer.

There is an important difference between a curriculum vitae and a resume in that the CV is longer and covers a wider range of information which may include all or some of the following:
  • Professional objectives
  • Summary of qualifications
  • Professional licenses, certification or memberships with professional bodies
  • Education: post-graduate, graduate, and undergraduate degrees and study
  • Relevant course work to match career objectives/specifications
  • Educational or professional honors or awards
  • Scientific or academic research, laboratory experience and related skills
  • Description of thesis or dissertation, papers written, publications
  • Academic or professional presentations
  • Related extracurricular activities, professional and association memberships
  • Community involvement
  • Work experience – paid or volunteer
  • Technical and specialized skills such as computer programming or laboratory instrumentation
  • Interests – future academic or professional goals
  • Travel/exposure to cultural experiences
  • Foreign language skills
  • Additional information that may support objective or qualification
Getting Started
Sorting through all your important information is often an extremely daunting task. This easy step-by-step guide to formatting your CV will help you to organise your relevant skills and experience into a logical and attention-grabbing CV.

To get started, list the major headings as mentioned above and begin to organise your background in education, skills and experience under the relevant headings. Once you have organised all this information, it will be much easier to see what is and is not appropriate to include on your CV.

When listing your background be descriptive and lead with your strongest experience and skills. By summarising your most relevant or attractive skills and experience at a glance you will capture the reader’s attention. Often a job title will not sufficiently convey, or, will ‘under-sell’ the role you played within a company. If this is the case, make headings out of your skills e.g. “Over 15 years of teaching experience includes:” and then list your main experience descriptively rather than by date and company. These are the elements of you and your skills that employers are interested in primarily.
