Within all communities there are individuals who suffer from learning disabilities, poor mental health or other problems
that make it difficult for them to cope with everyday life. Social workers provide valuable support for these
people and make it possible for them to lead fuller more satisfying lives despite the challenges they face. In addition
to helping and supporting these individuals, social workers also help communities understand these problems and how to
deal with them.
Social workers who care for the various needs of these more vulnerable members of society organise care and support,
assess their needs and provide services to meet those needs. Much like any social worker, an individual who is
interested in working with Older people and Adults services will need to be able to; interact effectively with
people of all ages (especially the elderly), understand and empathise with people, communicate efficiently, be
diplomatic and knowledgeable about elderly rights and protection issues while being sensitive to all parties
concerned, and be effective in encouraging and inspiring people.
